As it is the month of January, most gardens will need protecting from frosts, winds, and rain, so you’ll need to maintain stakes, ties, fleeces, and other supports for damage.
Also consider moving plants to sunnier positions to give them more light, and moving potted plants nearer to the house to protect them from the cold air.
Remember to feed the wildlife that gathers in your garden, especially the birds as their food sources are in short supply during winter. If you’re feeling particularly green fingered, then you may want to start planning this year’s vegetable plot.

- Recycle your Christmas tree by shredding it for mulch
- Clean pots and greenhouses ready for spring
- Dig over any vacant plots that have not been dug already
- Repair and re-shape lawn edges
- Inspect stored tubers of Dahlia, Begonia and Canna for rots or drying out
- Prune apple and pear trees
- Start forcing rhubarb
- Plan your vegetable crop rotations for the coming season
- Keep putting out food and water for hungry birds
- Make a polythene shelter for outdoor peaches and nectarines, to protect against peach leaf curl
