NEW Fountain Square Flower Bed Sponsorship

by Gill Ford

Amazingly it is 10 years since Cranleigh entered its first South & South West Britain in Bloom competition and we were very proud to be awarded a Silver Gilt Award.  We went on to win many more awards including the highest Gold Award with a huge amount of help from local businesses and residents.

A number of local residents and organisations worked very hard throughout the village.  The U3A Garden Group worked in Fountain Square and members helped to purchase and plant a great number of long lasting bulbs such as Apeldoorn tulips, tete-a-tete daffodils and Gladiolus Byzantinus and a lot of them are still flowering now!

Last year we did more work there and with sponsorship from The Rotary, we added some lovely golden Heucheras and pink flowering Geraniums, which put on a great show in spite of the ‘challenging’ summer weather.  We kept the beds tidy and weeded over the summer, watering and weeding as much as possible but we realised that a more colourful display was needed for next spring and we wanted to add some more nutrients to the soil.

So, I approached the Rotary and Notcutts for some help and the result was amazing as, with their help, we have added 200 more Apeldoorn tulips and tete-a-tete daffodils and lots of HEAVY bags of compost!  More Heucheras and Geraniums will be added in the spring too. The plants were cut back and the bulbs planted during the torrential rain last week – now there’s devotion for you!!

So, please do enjoy the flowers along the High Street as you walk past or sit sipping coffee and enjoying the food on offer.  Thank you to our sponsors Notcutts and the Rotary because we could not have done it without their support.
