Surrey Hills Singing School

The Surrey Hills Singing School is a family of choirs centred in Cranleigh and Guildford, attracting singers from as far afield as Dorking, Horsham, Woking, Farnham and even Wallington! Comprising of four choirs -from adult to child and experienced to novice – we are sure to have a choir to suit you so why not come along to one of our open rehearsals during September and try us out. There is no audition – three of our choirs are nonauditioned: a daytime ladies choir (SH Singers); a training choir for 6-7 year olds; and the Young Voices for children aged 8 upwards. We are also proud to have the national Adult Choir of the Year 2012, the auditioned Surrey Hills Chamber Choir, in our family of choirs too. As well as being entirely separate, the choirs also unite, giving the opportunity for families to perform together.

All choirs sing many styles of songs and perform from memory. The adult choirs have a wider repertoire with songs from the shows, popular songs, spirituals, folk songs, early music, and “classical” music from all eras, whilst the children like to sing musicals, pop, gospel and songs from Disney films. Support is given through recordings and part files available by download. Musical Director, Debbie Walton, also instructs all her students in musicianship and vocal technique through the vocal warm-ups and repertoire.

Singing

If you love to sing, or would love to share a hobby with your child, then come and try the open rehearsals for the non-auditioned choirs throughout September commencing on Monday 11th September. SH Singers rehearse Monday mornings 9.45-12 noon at Ewhurst Baptist Church; the Training Choir rehearse from 3.30-4.15pm and Young Voices from 4.30-5.45pm on Mondays at the St Cuthbert Mayne Primary School, Cranleigh. For the experienced singer – If you are an experienced singer and looking for a choir who enjoys performing to a high standard and participating in competitions, then contact Debbie to try out the mixed voice Chamber Choir.

We sing primarily individual a cappella songs in all styles of music and particularly like to focus on the visual and communicative side of the performance as well as the technicalities of the music. We are a friendly and ambitious choir, but you do not need to be an excellent sight reader to sing with us as mp3 part files are provided. The choir will be travelling to Vienna for a non-competitive music festival in late October. We rehearse on Wednesdays from 7.30-10.00pm at the Guildford United Reformed Church, followed by an optional trip to the Ship Inn, from the 6th September. We currently have vacancies for 2nd bass and tenor.
