Ask any junior school child in Cranleigh what ‘Open the Book’ is and they will tell you – but for those of you who don’t know . . .
Open the Book is a Churches together in Cranleigh group and what we do is each week we go into Cranleigh CofE Primary, Park Mead and Cuthbert Mayne assemblies and act out stories from the bible! It is a nationwide initiative with the aim to enable every child to hear the story of the Bible at school in their primary years.
We are now entering our fourth year of Open the Book and it is still so much fun! There are some real characters in our team and it is such a joy to work with people from ALL the churches and share bible stories that we all know and love in a way that the children remember and enjoy. We often get the children involved in the acting and we have found some excellent actors and actresses in the schools!
We try to be as creative as we can with our props and costumes to help the children engage with and remember the stories. Some of our props over the last year have been great, but how would you go about making an Ark for Noah? A whale to swallow Jonah? Enacting the parting of the red sea? Converting water in wine? There are the kind challenges that face our team every week and I have to say we have got quite inventive! My personal favourite so far this year was using the wheelchair from the back of church to create a chariot for Pharaoh. We are always looking for people to join our team, so if you can act, make props, sew costumes or read a story we have a spot for you!
