Surrey Hills Christmas Concerts – O NATA LUX (Born of Light)

Join the Surrey Hills Chamber Choir and their sister choir, the Surrey Hills Singers, for a traditional candlelit Christmas concert with many well-known carols and festive songs on a theme of light and hope.

The concert will be held in the large and stunning surroundings of St Nicolas Church, Bury Street, Guildford on Sunday 12th December at 8pm.

After eighteen months of limited social interaction, and particularly the starvation of singing together, the Surrey Hills Singers have subconsciously been drawn to three beautiful songs of light and hope as we continue to look for a pathway out of the darkness into the light. These songs are perfect for the current sentiment, offering gentle optimism: “Where the light begins” by Susan LaBarr published in 2020; “Lux Aeterna” by Sarah Quartel and “Run” by Snow Patrol. The Singers will also sing some Christmas classics to put you in the festive mood: “Silent Night”, “Ding Dong Merrily on High” and “Mary did you know”.

Still buzzing from their successful outdoor summer concert, as well as their international silver medal with gold diploma mark at the Virtual International Leonardo di Vinci Choral Competition in Florence this year for their video “Words” by Anders Endenroth, produced by Graham and Toby Webb (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyugOuzfsvU), the Chamber Choir are looking forward to their first indoor performance since March 2019. Christmas is particularly special this year, so we have focused on many familiar carols to enhance your celebration of the festive season. Carols include “In dulci jubilo”, “Adam lay y bounden”, “Here is the little door”, “The Angel Gabriel”, “Coventry Carol”, “Psallite unigenito” by Praetorius, “O Magnum Mysterium” by Poulenc and many more.

The Chamber Choir will start the performance with the title song of the concert “O nata lux” (Born of Light) by American composer Morten Lauridsen. A most atmospheric song that sets a 10th century hymn that speaks of Christ as ‘light born of light, redeemer of the world’.

Tickets are £14 for Adults and £5 for children and will become available on our website www.surreyhills-choirs.co.uk nearer to the performance date to allow time for any changes in Government restrictions. We are conscious of the need for Covid safety and will update the website with our exact precautions nearer the time. In the meantime we would ask you book your group tickets in one transaction for the option of bubbled seating.
