Wednesday 23rd February – Brueghel, The Seasons And The World
We welcome Gavin back to talk to us about Brueghel who in 1565 was commissioned to create a series of paintings for a dining room in Antwerp. The images, charting the course of a year, changed the way we view the world through art. This lecture explores how Brueghel pioneered a whole new way of thinking about the environment and our individual places within a shifting cosmos. – Gavin Plumley
The AGM will take place at 7.15 p.m. prior to the evening talk in February.
Wednesday 24th March – Jewellery From Downtown To Gatsby
Andrew is a jewellery craftsman and historian. He was commissioned to make several pieces of jewellery for the Downton Abbey series. In his talk, Andrew guides you through the extraordinary periods and events between 1890 and 1929, where the great Couturiers collaborated with the finest jewellers to produce jewels of outstanding quality and glittering opulence. – Andrew Prince
Wednesday 27th April – Writers And Relics – A Brief History Of Literary Tourism
What is it that makes us so interested in seeing where great literature began? This fascinating lecture takes us on a journey through the history of literary tourism in the UK. Beginning in Stratford in the 18th century with the cult of Shakespeare, we move north to Scotland and then end with the founding of museums dedicated to Wordsworth, the Brontes and Jane Austen. – Annalie Talent
Non-members are welcome to join us at a Talk as a guest. No commitment, but a donation is appreciated.
